When Your Registration Is Suspended for an Insurance Lapse

You received a notice from the Montana Motor Vehicle Division stating that your vehicle registration has been suspended due to an insurance lapse. Your insurer reported the lapse to the state, and the MVD suspended your registration automatically. You cannot legally drive the vehicle until you reinstate the registration, and you cannot renew or transfer plates until the suspension is cleared.

Montana requires continuous liability insurance on every registered vehicle. When your insurer cancels your policy or you let coverage lapse, the insurer notifies the MVD electronically. The MVD suspends your registration immediately. Reinstatement is not automatic when you buy new coverage — you must submit proof to the MVD and pay a reinstatement fee before the suspension is lifted.

The MVD will not lift the suspension on any vehicle until it receives proof for all vehicles that lapsed.

Montana Minimum Liability Limits

$25,000 / $50,000 / $20,000

Montana requires $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 bodily injury per accident, and $20,000 property damage. Every registered vehicle must carry at least these limits continuously. A lapse on any vehicle triggers registration suspension for that vehicle.

What the MVD Requires to Lift the Suspension

The MVD will not lift the registration suspension until you submit proof of continuous insurance coverage for the period of the lapse and proof of current coverage going forward. You must show that you either had coverage during the lapse period or that you did not drive the vehicle during that time. The MVD does not accept a statement that you will maintain coverage — you must document coverage already in place.

If you had coverage during the lapse but your insurer reported a cancellation in error, you need a letter from your insurer confirming continuous coverage and correcting the lapse report. If you let coverage lapse and then bought new coverage, you must provide proof of the new policy and pay the reinstatement fee. If you did not drive the vehicle during the lapse, you may submit an affidavit stating that the vehicle was not operated, but the MVD may still require proof of current coverage before lifting the suspension.

This fee applies per suspension event, not per vehicle. The fee is separate from any late registration renewal fees or plate transfer fees you may owe.

The MVD suspends registration for the specific vehicle reported by your insurer, but if you insure multiple vehicles on one policy and the entire policy lapsed, every vehicle loses its registration.

How to Reinstate Registration After a Lapse

Reinstatement requires three steps: obtaining proof of coverage, submitting that proof to the MVD, and paying the reinstatement fee. The MVD will not process your reinstatement until all three are complete.

First, contact your insurer and request a certificate of insurance or an SR-22 filing if the MVD has required one. Montana does not call the form an SR-22 — the official term is a certificate of insurance filed under MCA 61-6-133 — but insurers and the MVD use the SR-22 label interchangeably. The certificate proves you carry at least the state minimum liability limits. If your lapse was brief and you reinstated coverage with the same carrier, the carrier can issue a certificate showing continuous coverage. If you switched carriers or let coverage lapse for more than a few days, the new carrier will file a certificate showing coverage from the effective date of the new policy forward.

You can pay online through the MVD website, by mail, or in person at a county treasurer's office. The MVD processes reinstatements within 1 to 3 business days after receiving the certificate and fee. If you insure multiple vehicles on one policy, submit proof for each vehicle. The MVD will not lift the suspension on any vehicle until it receives proof for all vehicles that lapsed.

When the MVD Requires Continuous SR-22 Filing

If your registration was suspended for a lapse and you have a prior violation on your record, the MVD may require you to maintain continuous SR-22 filing for three years. The SR-22 filing period starts from the date you reinstate your registration, not from the date of the original violation. Your insurer files the certificate electronically with the MVD when you buy coverage, and the insurer must notify the MVD if your policy cancels or lapses during the three-year period. If your policy lapses again during the SR-22 period, the MVD suspends your registration again and restarts the three-year clock.

Not every lapse triggers a three-year SR-22 requirement. The MVD imposes the requirement based on your driving record and the reason for the suspension. If this is your first lapse and you have no other violations, you may only need to submit proof of current coverage and pay the reinstatement fee. If you have multiple lapses or a DUI on your record, the MVD will require continuous SR-22 filing. The suspension notice you received from the MVD states whether SR-22 filing is required.

SR-22 filing does not cost extra at the state level — Montana charges no separate SR-22 filing fee. The filing fee is a one-time charge per policy term. If you switch insurers during the SR-22 period, the new insurer will charge another filing fee to submit a new certificate.

How a Lapse Affects Multiple Vehicles on One Policy

If you insure multiple vehicles on one policy and the entire policy lapses, the MVD suspends registration for every vehicle covered by that policy. Your insurer reports the lapse to the MVD electronically, and the MVD's system matches the lapse report to every vehicle listed on the policy.

When you reinstate coverage after a multi-vehicle lapse, make sure your new policy lists every vehicle that was suspended. If you buy coverage for only one vehicle and leave the others uninsured, the MVD will lift the suspension only for the vehicle shown on the new certificate. The other vehicles remain suspended until you add them to a policy and submit proof of coverage. Some households assume that reinstating one vehicle automatically reinstates the others — it does not. Each vehicle must appear on a current insurance certificate before the MVD will lift its suspension.

What to Do Right Now

Contact your insurer today and request a certificate of insurance for every vehicle that was suspended. If the MVD has required SR-22 filing, tell your insurer so they file the certificate electronically. If you do not have current coverage, buy a policy that meets Montana's minimum liability limits before you contact the MVD. The MVD will process your reinstatement within 1 to 3 business days, and you will receive confirmation that the suspension has been lifted. Do not drive any suspended vehicle until you receive that confirmation.
